Now, there are mainly 2 ways to prevent hair falling at an alarming rate – besides the lifestyle choices we have mentioned already. And they are:

  • Supplements, and
  • Natural remedies

And today we will be taking a look at both one by one:

Supplements for hair fall

Hair fall, especially in middle aged women can be a big indicator of some deficiency in the body. This could be a deficiency in vitamins or minerals or even of hormones as commonly happens with menopause. In these cases, some simple supplements can help you to tackle the situation to a great extent:

  • Vitamin A – loaded with antioxidants, this protects the scalp as well as the skin, promoting hair growth and strengthening the hair follicles.
  • B vitamins – this helps to both stimulate blood flow to the scalp, as well as prevents premature greying.
  • Vitamin E – again, a blood circulation booster that keeps your hair follicles healthy and active.
  • Omega 3 fatty acids – help to keep the scalp and hair follicles healthy
  • Saw Palmetto – this Native American herb can help to keep skin and scalp healthy. It also inhibits production of DHT (a testosterone metabolite) which causes hair fall.

Menopausal supplements

However, you shouldn’t try supplements on your own as you can’t even be sure what deficiencies you have. So ideally, speak to your doctor, get your blood tested and talk dosages over with your doctor first.

But now we come to something that is safe and can be tried at home – without consulting a doctor as such!

Natural remedies for treating hair fall

Now we come to the natural remedies that you can try out. These are all topical in nature – and you need not consult a doctor, unless you have some adverse reaction that you can directly attribute to the remedy you are using:

Essential oil hair massage

Here’s a great recipe to try out. First make the oil blend and store in a dark bottle. Then use as directed. First the recipe (you can multiply the amounts to make more):

 Jojoba-oil

Take a dark bottle and carefully pour in the jojoba oil. Now add the essential oils one by one. Screw on the lid tightly and roll the bottle in your hands to combine. Now your oil is ready. To use:

  1. First wet your hair (or scalp) with warm water.
  2. Take a bit of the oil blend and apply to the roots properly.
  3. Put your hair in a shower cap and leave it in for the roots to soak up the oils for 20-30 minutes.
  4. Use a mild shampoo and good conditioner to rinse out the oil and wash your hair.
  5. Repeat once a week or more if you wish.

This will not only reduce hair fall, but also make your hair smell great!

  1. Mayonnaise hair mask – take a large dollop of pure mayonnaise (preferably homemade) and apply generously to hair and scalp. Leave hair in a shower cap for 1 hour and then rinse off and shampoo as usual.
  2. Try out egg and oil masks – these come with their own ingredients and instructions. Here is one with egg yolk, burdock and onion.
  3. Speaking of onion – onion, garlic and ginger juice (as they are very pungent) go a long way in stimulating hair follicles and promoting hair growth.
  4. Make a fenugreek seed paste – soak the seeds overnight in some water. In the morning make a paste with the same water and apply to scalp and hair. Massage it in and leave for half an hour before rinsing out and shampooing.

There are many other hair masks you can try – we have only listed a few here. And now let’s take a look at…

Hair Rinses

These are lighter than hair masks, and quicker to make and use. Here are 2 not very common ones. But they work pretty well, nevertheless:

  1. Brew some green tea (about 2 tea bags in 1 cup of water). Use this to rinse your hair after washing. Now leave it on for 1 hour for your scalp and hair to absorb the antioxidants in the tea. Now wash off.
  2. In a large pot take quite a bit of water. To this add a few potatoes and a few sprigs of fresh rosemary. Now boil till the potatoes are just cooked. Strain and reserve the liquid. Use a bit of this every day to rinse out your hair.
  3. Use a beer rinse. For this mix together an ounce each of beer and water. To this add 2 tsp. of apple cider vinegar and 5 drops of your favorite essential oil (to counter the smell of the beer).Remember to wash off like with the green tea rinse after half an hour, though.

Now these were our home remedies for hair loss. In addition to these, make sure you eat a healthy diet that has enough protein so as to help your body to grow healthy and shiny hair. Also reduce stress and take care of your hair – as we have mentioned earlier. And when you have tried a combination of means, as with most women, even you will notice fewer strands of hair on the pillow and in your comb. And of course – your hair will also get shinier, bouncier and healthier – at the same time!
